The barrel of the Esterbrook Nouveau Bleu Ballpoint Pen was inspired by the work of Alphonse Mucha - a leading representative of Art Nouveau art. The colors used in the body of the Nouveau Bleu pen are characteristic of the Czech artist's graphics. Among the mosaic of colors we can find such shades as eau de nil blue, an inherent element of paintings depicting idealized silhouettes of women of the late 19th century, for which Alphonse Mucha became famous.
The shape of the individual elements of the pen was taken from the Esterbrook pen models of the 1950s and 1960s.
